NPC is committed to the long-term development of the Gulf communities and to the expansion of the business. Our knowledge of Indigenous cultures is opening up a host of opportunities, which enable us to expand our business interests and, importantly, maintain our commitment to Indigenous people, their communities and their country.
NPC's mining-related initiatives, such as our employment and training programs and the NPC Mining and Civil School, directly benefit Indigenous communities by providing an opportunity for local people to work in the mining and civil industry and to participate in the economic life of their communities. In addition to this, profits received from contracting work supports significant development initiatives in the wider community. These initiatives include:
• The revival of the Waanyi language.
• The establishment of a language and cultural centre.
• The creation of language programs for Waanyi schools and the community.
• The provision of Indigenous scholarship program for Waanyi people.
• The establishment and support of local businesses
• The support and funding of recreational facilities and events in Doomadgee and other Gulf communities.
• The sponsorship of various sporting and cultural events including the Doomadgee Rodeo.
• The provision of funds for the development of infrastructure on the Lawn Hill Riversleigh Pastoral property to allow semi-permanent occupation on these lands for the Waanyi people.
